About Sergei Pravdin

Sergei Pravdin currently works at the N.N. Krasovskii Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics (IMM UB RAS) (Yekaterinburg, Russia) in the Function Approximation Theory Dept. as a Leading Researcher (2008 - current).

He focusses on in silico studying re-entry waves in the heart muscle and programming.

He also teaches classes on Discrete Analysis and Probability at Ural Federal University.

Educational background

  • 1992-2002, school years.
  • 1998-2002, part-time school of mathematics and informatics (IMM UB RAS) jointly with Ural State University, Yekaterinburg). Title of my essay was “Function approximation theory.”
  • 2002-06, Bachelor school at Ural State University, Yekaterinburg. Main field of study “Mathematics and computer science.” Specialization “System programming” (was chosen only to avoid choosing an alternative specialization in economics). Bachelor thesis had a title “Splines in blood test data approximation.”
  • 2006-08, Master school at the same place, the same main field of study. Specialization “Mathematical and computer modelling.” Master thesis had a title “Statistical prediction of refraction surgery outcomes using preoperative examination data.”
  • 2006-08, Pedagogics school at the same place, specialty “Higher school teacher.” Thesis had a title “Mathematics for students of humanitarian specialties.”
  • 2008-11, PhD school at IMM UB RAS. Research topic was “Prediction of refraction surgery outcomes using eye optics modelling.”
  • 2011-15, PhD school at Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium. Research topic was “Modelling of the cardiac left ventricle using discrete and fibre-based approaches.”
  • 2015, defense of Candidate of Science thesis, Yekaterinburg. Specialty “Physics and mathematics”; subspecialty 05.13.18 “Mathematical modelling, numerical methods and program complexes.” Thesis had a title “Mathematical modelling of structure and function of the cardiac left ventricle.”

Certifications

  • CCNA 1-4 (2005-06)
  • Fundamentals of Java Programming (2005)
  • Academic English B2 (2012)
  • Dutch B1 (2013)
  • 'Advanced Academic English: Writing Skills', taught by Ghent University (2013)

My scientific interests encompass mathematical and computer modelling of processes of various nature, mostly biological. Now I am working with active media models, in particular heart muscle, and also heart gross anatomy arouses my lively interest. In my group, we simulate cardiac rhythm disturbances and seek ways to treat them.

Workplaces

  • 2007 to pr. time, IMM UB RAS, Yekaterinburg.
  • 2015 to pr. time, Ural Federal University, Yekaterinburg. Researcher, docent.

My courses are

  • software optimization,
  • discrete analysis, combinatorics, probability theory.

Outreach and other professional activities

  • I worked as a teacher in ОЗШ (school of mathematics and IT for children 11-17 years) in 2005-17.
  • Also, I worked as an IT teacher (computers for beginners, Internet for beginners; in 2006), an editor of books for students (2009-11) and as a software developer (C, C#; in 2009).
